 Beyond the Gate.

Beyond the Gate is professional development for Early Years practitioners, childminders, nursery nurses and anyone interested in taking children aged 3 -5 out on regular visits to local green and natural spaces.

The course emphasizes the benefits of spending time in nature and recognizes the concerns that practitioners may have about being responsible for children in an unrestricted area.

Course Aim

The aim of the day is to give course participants the confidence required to manage groups of children outside in green spaces whilst facilitating a valuable learning experience for them.

‘Green spaces’ are defined as any open space with natural features, such as a park or grounds of other local amenities.

Course objectives;

1.       To be able to assess the suitability of places for regular visits.

2.       To be able to outline the logistics required when taking out groups of young children.

3.       To begin to identify the opportunities afforded by these experiences.

4.       To identify the skills and competencies necessary for the visits to be valuable learning experiences.

5.       To be aware that there may be further areas of professional development needed and to plan for these.

Topics covered include;

·         Benefits of spending time in nature

·         Kit and equipment required

·         Suitability of site

·         Hazards and risk management

·         Learning opportunities

The course can be run as a one day or as 3 twilight sessions.   Course fees are negotiable depending on time, location and number of settings signing up.

I aim to make the training accessible to all so please contact me on for more details.
